TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – In the 1950’s and 60’s it was Tupelo’s version of Rock Around the Clock and Happy Days.
Today the parking lot at the Oren Dunn Museum was packed as residents of Tupelo remembered the days when Dudies Diner was the premier place to go and hangout. Harry Collins is Secretary of the “Friends of Oren Dunn Museum”. He remembers when Dudies was open long before the advent of the Golden Arches.
“Back in the 50’s there wasn’t these franchise chains, it was small people like this. There was a Little Joe’s Cloverleaf drive-in, Dudies Diner, Johnny’s Hamburgers in east Tupelo, and Donna’s Grill. That was the restaurants that you had to choose from back in the 50’s and early 60’s,” says Collins.
Collins says proceeds from today’s event will be used to continue to renovate the Dudies Diner Car which was in poor condition when it was obtained by the Oren Dunn Museum.
