COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A Columbus woman dies in an early morning house fire and two others escape without injuries in East Columbus.

All that can be seen at the Cannon Trace home is yellow tape, a grim reminder of the loss of life in an unexpected tragedy.

Columbus firefighters were dispatched to the Cannon Trace home at six Friday morning. WCBI News spoke with the mother who told of how her son successfully rescued his grandfather but could not save his grandfather’s daughter.

“And he just woke up and he said he couldn’t see anything because it was dark black in there. So when he went to her room to open the door he couldn’t see anything but smoke,” said Marsha Heard/Victim’s Relative.

“We had three trucks respond, 10 firefighters. They saw fire in the front side of the house. Had one person inside, that was one fatality,” said Anthony Colom/Columbus Fire & Rescue.

47 year old Rechelle Heard died in the blaze. It took 15 minutes to put out the blaze. And situations could have been even worse.

“I’m just glad that he was even able to be here to try to do whatever it was that he could do to try to get everybody out of the house. He was able to get his granddad out but he wasn’t able to make it back into the room where my sister-in-law was at,” said Marsha Heard/Victim’s Relative.

Marsha Heard had only good things to say, concerning a relative she is sure to miss in the future.

“She is the most nicest person that you could ever run across ever in life,” said Marsha Heard.

The cause of the early morning blaze is still under investigation.
