LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Monday marks the four-week anniversary of tornadoes ripping through the four counties.

And despite major clean up efforts, some work remains to be done.

Downed trees, building materials and other debris still dot the landscape, especially on property owned by the elderly, low-income and under insured. Volunteers are the only way to get the items cut up and moved to the street for removal.

“The greatest need is with debris removal. We still have a lot of homes with debris in the yards and trees that are down but haven’t been cut up yet so we are looking for people with chain saws and other heavy equipment, tractors and such that can get that stuff cut up and taken to the roads so the city and county crews can pick it up and get it out of the way,” Lowndes United Way Executive Director Patricia Brock said.

To help, contact the United Way or one of the relief recovery centers in those communities.
