HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) – The city of Houston is working towards introducing a tourism tax again.
Last summer, the 1% tourism tax didn’t pass through voters. The board of alderman have once-again voted to get the legislatures approval on the tax.

This time, city leaders are proposing a 2% tourism tax on hotels, motels and restaurants.

Mayor Stacey Parker says they have looked at how surrounding cities have thrived off a similar tax and hope to benefit in the same way.

“And we have a lot of people that come from out of town to come in and visit our community, so we want to take advantage of that situation just like every other community that does,” said Mayor Parker.
If passes through the legislature, a special election will be held this summer on the tax issue.
