INGOMAR, Miss. (WCBI) – The entire Union County School District is mourning the unexpected death of a fifth grade student.  Eleven year old Brandon Spears was struck by a car Thursday evening in Ecru.  Spears died this weekend at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis .  WCBI’s Allie Martin visited Ingomar Attendance Center, where Brandon was a student and tells us how teachers and students are coping and finding strength in faith.

School colors at the Ingomar Attendance Center are blue and red, but on Monday, everyone was wearing orange.

“Brandon’s favorite color was orange.”

Sure enough, this photo from the 2014 Falcon Yearbook shows Brandon, then a fourth grader, in an orange shirt.

Mark Grubbs is principal at Ingomar Attendance Center, where Brandon had attended school since Kindergarten.  Like many in the small community, Grubbs was at a high school baseball game Thursday evening when he got word about the terrible accident involving one of his students.Brandon passed away Saturday and Principal Grubbs says he will miss the fifth grader.

“Brandon was a fun loving kid, reminds me a lot of me , school was a place he could be social, he was a very smart kid, I wish all kids were like him.”

The sign in front of the school says, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Spears family, Brandon’s mother released a statement about her son, saying he was the most energetic boy she’d ever met, with a sweet smile, who loved his two dogs, family, loved going to school and looked up to his big brother.  His mother also said they serve  a God who makes no mistakes.  Staffers here say that strong Christian faith will see everyone through.

“I know his mom, Mendy, is strong in her faith, and as she said from the beginning that she knows he’s in a better place and she’s so thankful for that.”

Orange ribbons are also displayed outside the school and the flag has been lowered to half staff in memory of Brandon.  His  funeral is set for Tuesday and the entire fifth grade class will be honorary pallbearers.
