Video: Joyner Neighborhood Residents Discuss Rebuilding and Redevelopment
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A Tupelo neighborhood hit hard by the April 28th tornado is poised to create conservation district to oversee the redevelopment of the area. The Temple B’Nai Israel was the site of tonight’s special meeting of the Joyner Neighborhood Association. Mayor Jason Shelton says Joyner residents will create what is comparable to a city planning commission to supervise the rebuilding.
“This is the approach that developmental services came up with here particularly like Joyner that has a very historical value but it is not under a set of covenants that would require a home to be rebuilt in a certain way,” said Shelton. “So this is way to protect the integrity of the neighborhood.”
Shelton says the Joyner neighborhood will create a committee that will approve permits for residents to rebuild. They will vote to approve the creation of the conservation district at Thursday’s regular meeting of the Joyner neighborhood association. Shelton says he intends to give each neighborhood association the option enact regulations that best fit the need of their areas.
