VERONA, Miss. (WCBI) – 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of federal act that created the extension service. And Tuesday Night the Lee County Extension Service held a Centennial Celebration at the Lee County Ag Center in Verona. The Smith Level Act created extension services at Land Grant universities like Mississippi State. Lee County Extension Agent Sherry Smith says Mississippi claims that 4-H started in Mississippi.

“Nobody knows what the true story is but Mississippi tries to claim we’re the beginning of where 4H got started with the Extension Service which 4H is the youth part of the Extension Service. When it first got started that I think is neat, they used the 4H clubs to try to get the new information to the adults because you know sometimes as adults it’s hard for us to change and be willing to listen to new ideas.”

Smith says the celebration was originally supposed to be in May but was moved because it was too soon after the April 28th tornado. She says the kids are getting ready for the big livestock show Friday and Saturday night.
