ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — This time of year, many organizations are giving back to their communities in line with the holiday spirit.

Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is one organization that goes the extra mile to help needy families all year long.

Now the Loaves and Fishes in Aberdeen is expanding its services to provide more assistance to the elderly.

For nearly 30 years, the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Aberdeen has been providing food for families in need. Today, the organization helps about 400 families each year. Now, they want to make sure they’re also meeting the needs of the elderly.

“The senior citizens, that’s the ones I’m most concerned about,” Lloyd Massey with Loaves and Fishes of Aberdeen said. “People who are 75 and older or don’t have a way to come down here. So we set up this grocery store so that they can come down on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and shop just like they do in a regular grocery store.”

In its efforts to serve more residents, Loaves and Fishes of Aberdeen is now partnering with United Way of Monroe County.

“This past year, United Way was able to take this wonderful agency on as a provisional agency,” Patti Parker with United Way of Monroe County said. “They’re now in full swing with the services they offer here in Aberdeen.”

Loaves and Fishes moved to the old Land Chemical building near downtown Aberdeen four years ago. Massey says the new space has allowed them to grow and now they want the people to take advantage of the services.

“We want people to see what they have in Aberdeen,” Massey said. “Don’t be ashamed of the food pantry. I think it’s the greatest thing in the world that the city can say, we can feed our hungry.”

The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Aberdeen also hosts once a month. The next feeding is on Dec. 13.
