COLUMBUS, Miss.)WCBI)–Long time Lowndes County Circuit Clerk Haley Salazar is not seeking re-election next year. Although she is busy getting ready for the upcoming primary elections, Salazar feels now is the time to retire.

Salazar is looking forward to retirement after 24 years at her post, this November is going to be the last election she’ll be presiding over.

“Everyday is not the same by far. You never know whats going to walk in the door exactly whats going to happen. But you do follow the law and seek for guidance and procedures to get it done, and that’s what we’ll do in this situation,” said Haley Salazar/Lowndes County Circuit Clerk.

Performing her duties as circuit clerk meant doing everything manually, there were no computers in those days. Now the voting process has become much more simpler when casting ballots.

“It did, it makes it easier for the voter. Its a little harder on us for pre-election work, a little more work goes into getting the election prepared. Getting the machines prepared, but it makes it a lot easier for the voters. I think the voters love the machines and election night you know it goes very smoothly,” said Haley Salazar.

And now that this public servant is no longer occupying the office that could be considered her second home, especially during those long election nights and days that usually follow?

“Ha, ha, I’m going to look forward to spending more time with family, spending time in service to my church, and other than that, I just don’t know. I’ll take it as it comes and we’ll go from there,” said Haley Salazar.

Salazar actually came to the circuit clerk’s office in 1976 and once served as deputy clerk there, so in reality she’s been at that post some 40 years.
