JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) -An effort by large grocery stores to sell wine in Mississippi is being met with opposition from independent retailers.

Kroger, Walmart and other large stores are behind a move to change state law so wine could be sold in retail grocery stores in counties where it is legal to sell alcohol.

The Mississippi Hospitality Beverage Association, which represents independent beverage retailers, is opposed to changing the law.

Sammy Perryman is with “Oscar’s Wine and Spirits” and says changing the law would hurt small stores.

“Walmart has a lot of buying power, and Kroger and they, it , by keeping it in package stores it protects small businessman, there’s not many small businesses left.”

A bill hasn’t been filed yet, but proponents say one will be filed before the deadline in Jackson.
