NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI) — The Nettleton police officer who stopped a deadly shooting rampage two months ago is being honored by his colleagues.

Officer Robert Davis Jr. received the Hometown Hero award during a meeting of the Monroe County Law Enforcement Association in Amory.

On April 16, Davis came upon what he though was a wreck on Main Street. Two people had been shot inside of a car, one died on scene, the other at a hospital.

The shooter fired at the officer, who took cover behind his police car and returned firing, striking and killing the shooter.

“When you get up in the morning and go to work, anytime you go on duty, you’re not expecting the things that happened to me that day,” Davis said. “But everyday I go to work, I pray, everyday, that in the event I have to perform my duties in such a manner, that — I’m a Christian, so I pray God would wrap his arms around me everyday.”

The award recognized Davis’ quick thinking and actions, which law enforcement officials say saved lives that April afternoon.
