NEW HOPE, Miss. (WCBI) – Some local kids are giving back to the community in a big way.

About a month ago, every class at New Hope Elementary voted on a local non-profit charity to donate money to.

Everyday the students brought in “coins for compassion,” and more than $2,000 was raised for nearly 20 charities, like The Palmer Home and The Humane Society.

Educators say they are proud to see their kids learning the real reason for the holiday season.

“They’re having fun with it but they’re also learning to love people and to show them that they care about them,” said Principal Tammy Aldridge.

This was the first time for the compassion campaign but the school is planning to continue their giving throughout the year.
