TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A Northeast Mississippi company is part of country music history.  Tupelo based Country Road Furniture is delivering hand made rocking chairs for a Nashville museum honoring the late George Jones.  As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, the company has a long history with the legendary singer.

Inside this converted barn in south Lee County on a cattle farm, unique furniture is made everyday.

Country Road Furniture began making its patented rocking chairs more than a decade ago. A few years later the company was making a special rocking chair for famed singer/songwriter George Jones.

Like all pieces from Country Road, the 68 pound George Jones rocker, emblazoned with the singer’s logo, is hand made from oak.

“We bring it in in bundles of lumber, boards, random width, we run it through a chop saw, cut it to length run it across a table saw to size it,  bar clamp it, run it through a planer,” said co owner Kenny Hankins.

Jones liked the chair, and would give one away to a lucky fan at his concerts. The unique rocking chair was also featured at the singer’s funeral two years ago.

“I was watching it on the computer, and all of a sudden, there on the stage, by George’s casket, was our rocking chair.  And we were getting phone calls from people, who had seen it like we did, ‘ saying did you see the rocking chair?  So I knew it wasn’t over, as far as the production of that rocker,” said co owner Tina Wilburn.

Now, she says, Country Road Furniture and is selling the remaining 400 George Jones chairs, through the singer’s website.

Also,  25 of the chairs are being placed in a theater in the George Jones Museum, set to open later this month in Nashville.

“When a fan is sitting there watching the film on George’s life, they’re rocking in a rocking chair,” Wilburn said.

After the limited edition George Jones chairs are sold, Wilburn and Phillips say they will produce more units for the singer’s fans worldwide.

“That is something we would be honored to do,” she said.
