Video: Recent Indictments Raise Concerns in Pickens County, Alabama

CARROLLTON, Ala. (WCBI) – A number of people arrested in a Pickens County, Alabama drug round-up earlier this year are making some serious allegations against the people who put them in handcuffs.

Several of the more than one hundred people that were indicted on drug charges met with the NAACP to discuss their options.

Many in the group claim their rights were violated. Some say they never bought any drugs and they were forced to plead guilty. One even says she had to use a mop bucket to use the restroom.

No one would talk on camera about the allegations.

District Attorney Chris McCool tells WCBI all drug cases in his office have video evidence and all cases were taken to a grand jury before these people were arrested.

He stands by the cases.

McCool also says no complaint has been filed with his office about the conditions of the jail and that he has explained the process to do so.

Three Pickens County jailers were fired after being indicted for smuggling food and at least one cell phone into the jail.

They’re accused of getting women to strip for doughnuts.

McCool says the drug round up and that incident did overlap.
