JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi lawmakers approve a controversial bill Wednesday night that could impact gay and transgender people.

The Senate approved the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience From Government Discrimination Act.”

House Bill 1523 would allow individuals, and religious and private organizations to deny service to LGBT people based on religion.

The Senate made some changes to the bill, and it’ll go back to the House again for consideration.

Proponents say this bill protects many Mississippians’ religious liberties from government interference, following last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to legalize same sex marriage.

Opponents say it moves Mississippi backward, and undermines equality.
