SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — U.S. Senator Roger Wicker says he’s closely watching developments in the scandal surrounding veterans hospitals.

On Friday, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned amid allegations of delays in treatment and other problems at veterans hospitals across the country.

Wicker says Shinseki’s resignation is the first step to fixing the problem, but he says much more needs to be done.

“It’s a good thing that he’s no longer a distraction. It does not solve the problem,” Wicker said. “The problem is deep seated in the VA, and we need some structural changes. So, this by no means solves the problem, it just shines more light on it. ”

All VA hospitals nationwide will have to open their records to show how they are caring for veterans.
