FULTON, MISS. (WCBI) – A local community college makes the top ten list of Best Two year colleges nationwide.   WCBI’s Allie Martin tells us how the great showing can have a major impact throughout the entire area.

Elizabeth McCullar took some time between classes at ICC to campaign for the homecoming court.

“Here’s a button and there’s a button,” McCullar said to fellow students.

McCullar is a sophomore who is in her second year on the Fulton campus.  She is a cheerleader and is also a member of Indian Delegation.  McCullar says she felt at home at ICC since her first visit.

“The classrooms and things, there was like a 20 to 1 student ratio so we had small classroom , we could get to know our teacher and they would actually know our name,” she said.

“Classroom Experience” was one of the factors the online consumer financial site “WalletHub” used to rank community colleges nationwide.   ICC took the number six spot out of more than 600 community colleges.

ICC’s President says the high ranking shows the school is a great investment.

“We are the only community college in the state that is fully supported by its counties,  they have maxed out there,” said ICC President Mike Eaton.

Along with affordability, whenever students, faculty or staff are asked about the strengths of ICC and what makes it a top community college, a couple of things keep coming up, such as, the emphasis on graduation and the idea that every student matters.

“We adjust to what the students need, that makes our job easier, students think of us in a better way, where they think, ok, they’re working for me,” said E Dana Nail, an economics professor at ICC.

That means students are prepared to either enter the workforce, or continue their education.  For students like McCullar, being named one of the top community colleges in the country also fosters school spirit.

“Go Indians, chop nation,” she said.

Officials with the newly created Fulton Chamber of Commerce says the big honor will also help recruit business and industry to the area.
