Video: Tallahatchie River Fest Kicks off with Tribute to William Faulkner

NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) -New Albany’s fall festival kicks off with an awards ceremony named after the city’s most famous son.

The annual “Faulkner Literary Competition Awards” drew a packed house at First United Methodist Church on Friday. That event starts the annual “Tallahatchie Riverfest” which was organized around the birthday of William Faulkner.

Entries for the literary competition were received from the area, state, nation and the world.

“It just kind of brings our culture and arts all into focus and , today is his birthday, he would be 118 today, that’s how it all got started, it was around his birthday and it brings all the good things about New Albany into one great weekend, music arts and culture.”

Also, a stretch of Highway 30 between New Albany and Oxford was renamed the “William Faulkner Scenic Byway” The Riverfest runs this evening and all day Saturday.
