CALHOUN CITY, Miss.(WCBI)–A Summer reading program becomes an opportunity for some Calhoun County children to meet and honor their favorite super heroes who just happen to be first responders. At that gathering a little girl is reunited with those heroes that rescued her during an accident.

Children and their parents at the Calhoun City Library are applauding their super heros. No, its not some comic book character. Just ordinary people who are there in times of emergencies, when seconds count.

“And I know first hand now from experience not just from hear say that these people are here to save lives and to help people. And that’s their job. Not only is that their job, but that’s their responsibility, they love this,” said Cathleen Hych/Kashyra’s Grandmother.

Nine year old accident victim Kashyra McBride gets a chance to say a heartfelt thank you to men and women lending a helping hand, that day in March when her mom and two sisters died due to icy road conditions. Although she is doing well, the events are still fresh on her mind.

“I asked her what happened,, she said all she remembers were these hands. She said grandmom their hands. They came in the car and saved me,” said Cathleen Hych.

Those hands were those of her human angel, Randolph Fire Department first responder Ben Canerdy.

“Lost it on the ice, turned upside down in the ditch and it was lying on an embankment and the wrecker service for some reason he was right there. Pretty close and he had done run a cable to the vehicle actually holding it to keep it from sliding on down the hill,” said Ben Canerdy/Randolph Fire Department.

“And you could see her moving inside the vehicle so we told her, you know get back away from the glass where we can break it,” said Chandra Canerdy/Nurse-EMR.

“They were down there working on them, within, Ben pulled her out and handed her to me. And then I physically carried her up the hill and into the ambulance,” said Bobby Amador/Fire Fighter.

And so as Kashyra gets to officially meet these professionals who rescued her that day, the most rewarding……….

“Today, getting to see her,” said Chandra Canerdy.

Kashyra is some kind of hero herself for having gone through that ordeal. Those Calhoun County children attending the Summer reading Program have learned two things. Their super heroes are first responders, and when needed they can just dial 9-1-1.
