LEE COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)–When there is a threat of bad weather in the area, there is one option being taken by two Lee County men. They have installed a safe room in their homes.

Jim Armstrong and Jim Crestman of Lee County took time Monday morning to inspect their latest serious toy. Never again are they going to take a chance of not being kept from harm like during last year’s tornado. Even if an EF-5 tornado heads towards their home, they now have safe rooms.

“At that point we were sitting on our couch and I looked at my wife and said, if this thing hits to us we got nowhere to go. Due to the topography where we live and our house construction, we just didn’t have a place that we felt that we could get and be protected,” said Jim Armstrong/Safe Room Owner.

“We looked around and we just didn’t have a place to go. The way our home is constructed, there is not many interior walls that are, that are not along the outside,” said Jim Crestman/Safe Room Owner.

That led them to research different options for tornado safety inside the home. That path led to Joplin Missouri where they found the company who make the safe rooms. That in turn has led to a new business venture where they are marketing the shelters in the region.

“My wife has gone into it and her cell phone works inside the safe room. You can get a weather radio that WCBI is partner with Midland I think, to offer weather radios. Well they offer an antennae you can put external to their safe room and your weather radio will work inside,” said Jim Armstrong.

So confident in their study steel protection device, they are shouting its praises all over the region known for experiencing tornadoes.

“Tornado alley right here. And just the recent tornado that came through Tupelo, you know everyone had a heightened sense of awareness. So we felt like it would be a good opportunity to start a business where we can offer people safety and security in their homes,” said Jim Armstrong.

“Mississippi is certainly prone to tornadoes. And you never know when it might strike,” said Jim Crestman.
