Video: Watermelon Mania Takes Over Starkville Farmers Market
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s one of the most popular summer time fruits. Watermelon mania has taken over the Starkville Farmers Market this holiday weekend.
“It’s a way for the community to access local, healthy food and to be able to talk to the people that produce the food they eat,” says Jennifer Prather, with the Greater Starkville Development Partnership.
You can find everything from tomatoes and squash, to homemade jams and soaps. However, this weekend the Starkville Famers Market put the spotlight on a summer fruit favorite: watermelon.
“It’s one of those that you can only get in the summer time and you typically get it for a short period of time. So I think once you can get your hands on them, people just run to it. It’s perfect they’re really in full force right around the 4th of July,” says Prather.
Janice Collins lives in Brandon and travels to Starkville’s Farmers Market.
“We have been particularly looking for watermelons and we haven’t found any. So there was a booth here today selling them. He guarantees that they’re really good so we’re going to give it a shot,” says Collins.
One of the most unique things about watermelon is the way you eat it.
“It’s a great thing to cut open, sit down and get sticky and nasty with your family and friends. Of course, then you turn into a seed spitting contest and what more fun can that be,” says Collins.
The Starkville Farmer’s Market is open to the public every Tuesday and Saturday and is located downtown at the corners of Jackson and Lampkin Streets.
