CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI) – Corinth Police are searching for suspects in a double homicide Saturday evening. As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, authorities say the shootings followed a day of fights and violence throughout south Corinth. Police believed everyone had calmed down, but events quickly took a deadly turn.
A grieving mother visits the site where her 25 year old son was shot to death.

“All these bullets”

Orange paint marks the spot where police found shell casings, and this bullet riddled car is still in its parking space, grim reminders of what happened here the night before Easter.

“They shot my baby in the head.”

Amarius Rakim Sweeney was killed, along with 22 year old Deonta Dewayne Herman. Authorities say more than 100 people were congregating at the Nash Way Apartments, when shots rang out Saturday night. Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance was patrolling nearby and is amazed more people weren’t injured or killed.

“I heard the gunshots go off, somewhere between 50 and 80 gunshots, I proceeded to the apartment complex where I heard the shots coming from , arrived on scene, saw a large group of kids and people running in every direction.”

Sweeney was found in the parking lot, he was taken to Magnolia Regional Hospital where he died. Herman, who was an outstanding basketball player in high school and at NEMCC, was found dead in a yard behind the apartments. Police say Herman had a gun, Sweeney was unarmed.

Monday morning, investigators were back at the scene, searching garbage dumpsters for evidence, looking at bullet holes in walls and windows and talking to neighbors in what police say is a gang related shootout.. Sweeney’s mother admits her son was involved in gangs several years ago, but claims he had left that lifestyle.

Police say the shooters could be from the area or from out of town. Sweeney’s mother has a message for those who know what happened here Saturday evening.

“If it were you, what would you want done, because if it was me, I’d tell on you, I’d tell on you and I’d tell on everybody behind you for that mother to get justice for her child.”

Chief Dance says there have been a lot of calls from people who were in the area, and that is leading to conflicting stories and leads.

“We’ve got people pointing the finger this way, people pointing the finger that way, we’re just trying to figure out which one’s truth and which one’s not.”

Once that happens, Chief Dance expects arrests will be made. In the meantime, two families are preparing to bury their loved ones and they want justice.

“You are going down if you murdered my son, and I mean it.””
