Video: Whitehill Missionary Baptist Church Offers Summer Enrichment Program

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – A Tupelo church is helping make sure grade schoolers aren’t falling behind in their reading skills this summer.

Whitehill Missionary Baptist Church began a two week summer reading enrichment program.   Young people come for two weeks , several hours each day.

The classes target first through third graders and the program provides lessons, activities and guest readers, like Miss Tombigbee.

“We want to make sure everybody has an opportunity to learn about the Lord, first, but we also want to make sure we teach these kids, the school system, does their job,  we have parents, they do their job, we want to make sure we do our part also,” said Stacy Williams, a church member who organizes the outreach.

“Definitely, reading is going to be a key they are going to need to succeed in school and with new system, Common Core coming into play we want to be sure each student is strong in every area, Reading, English , Math and Science so they can be successful in their school career,” said Miss Tombigbee, Alivia Roberts.

The summer enrichment program began Monday and runs through next week.
