OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A burn ban remains in place for Montgomery County and other areas are considering it. Conditions are dry and supervisors who rely on recommendation from the Mississippi Forestry Commission often air on the side of caution, especially since there has been no rain and vegetation are not green anymore.

“Some of which are just out and out arson. Others are accidental, and then others are where people have been burning trash or burning brush something of that nature. And it got away from them,” said Kirk Rosenhan/Oktibbeha County Fire Coordinator.

Special trucks are used when there is an out of control fire. And pumper trucks are not the ones used for brush fires.

“We do have brush trucks, four wheel drive that are capable of off road operations. We have manual tools because some of the areas that we have fires are simply inaccessible and that’s why forestry helps us out a bunch with a bull dozier,” said Kirk Rosenhan.

Keep in mind we are not talking about business or residential fires, however, destruction or loss from wildfires can still be costly.

“Pine farms, we have utility poles that burn down out in the middle of a field somewhere. Hay bails, burned up 50 hay bails here awhile back, thats money,” said Kirk Rosenhan.

Violation of a burn ban is a misdemeanor resulting in fines anywhere from $100 to $500.
