WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI)– At West Point High School a campaign aimed at stopping gun violence is underway. The West Point Kappa League project begins today[Monday] and students are getting involved.

Gun violence and deaths resulting from criminal actions is an all too common occurrence touching the lives of so many in North Mississippi. This week Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is challenging students to take up a pledge by signing a banner that will be hung in the hallway of the school.

“I’m doing this because my cousin was shot with a gun and I think that this should go viral that there shouldn’t be no gun violence,” said Kadaijha Johnson/West Point High Senior.

High School senior Kadaijha Johnson is one of many teenagers signing the pledge to: never carry a gun to school, never use a gun to settle a personal problem or dispute, and to use their influence to keep friends from using guns to settle disputes.

“I signed the paper because I think all lives matter. And guns should not be the reason why someone’s life is taken away,” said Dynesha Deanes/West Point High Senior.

“We just want them to start the conversation so that we can end it. I mean we can’t start soon enough is my thoughts,” said Vince Davis/Kappa League Chairman.

One fraternity members has shared with them his personal story.

“There were two young men, high schoolers came 9 mm, busted both sides of the windows out saying get out the car. Luckily by God’s grace as I said, that I’m here to talk about it today,” said Vince Davis/Kappa League Chairman.

Another mentor, Demontra Henley, seen here in this photo hopes others will learn from his old life of crime.

“He was on the other side of it. Actually holding the gun, but he has totally turned his life around. And he is a big advocate of non violence,” said Vince Davis.

Young people are an incredible source for change. And so as gun violence seems to be so prevalent in Columbus, West Point, and Starkville, there is hope that at least signatures on a banner and conversation, will stop the violence.

The goal of the kappa League is to reach out to as many schools in the entire Golden Triangle as possible.
