WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI)–Two West Point High School seniors make an impressive showing in national academic competition held over the weekend in Washington DC.

The FCCLA (Family Career And Community Leaders of America) National Champs are bringing home the silver and bronze medal in their respective categories.

When it comes to playing her flute or piccolo, West Point High Senior Elvia Davis seems right at home. The gold medal winner in recent state competition back in March is equally comfortable competing in the area of early childhood education.

“I can be quiet and stern and teaching, and then you can come to band, you can just let it all out…loud,” said Elvia Davis/Silver Medal Winner.

Band members and the entire school district are making noise after Davis captures a silver medal on the national level for putting together a successful lesson plan on developing children and teachers who instruct them. Davis’ classmate Anna Campbell joined her on the Washington, DC trip, receiving a bronze medal in the category of career investigation.

“You compete with people all over the world, so I was calm but I was nervous at the same time. But then I was confident so, a lot of mixed feelings,” said Elvia Davis.

“We start from day one, they learn how to do lesson plans, set up a daycare. They go out into the community and actually teach lessons to students at the head start here in Clay County,” said Tanya Camp/WPSD Instructor.

The impressive showing by both ladies involved some 4,000 contestants, 30 to 40 in their categories alone. Educators Camp and Ray are telling us they are not surprised at the positive outcome.

“Well a Mississippi girl going to Washington DC was a big change but you have to be ready for the change and ready for the transition. So I adjusted real quick,” said Elvia Davis.

“We’re not worried about competing against other students from across the state and nation. Cause we know our kids are just as capable as they are,” said Patrick Ray/WPSD.

“I mean it was all of us together. It was God number one, my teachers, my parents, and then I had to put in some work myself….so,” said Elvia Davis.

The silver medal winner wants to delve into real estate while setting up her own daycare center one day. She also plans on trading her green and white band uniform for the maroon and white at Mississippi State.
