WEST POINT, Miss.(WCBI)–Mississippi State University’s Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture is partnering with a West Point school for science enrichment lessons.

The game is called weather bingo and young scientists at Central School are delving into climate and temperature changes….if only for two days.

“The kids could actually see the different kinds of weather conditions like fog and rain and snow. And then also had little pictures of weather instruments. So by playing the game they are looking at these pictures, they are having to read through these words. They are associating, there vocabulary with the pictures,” said MSU Extension Service’s Leslie Burger.

Twirling around an inexpensive but accurate weather tool becomes key to solving any equation.

“And when you sling it it catches air temperatures and you wet it a little on this little sock on it. And then you sling it for 15 seconds. And you check it and it tells you different temperatures,” said Central Elementary School student Charlee Jordan.

“Like before you twist it you see the temperatures before and then when you twist it you get the actual temperature. And you subtract the first temperature from the next one, that’s how you get your humidity,” said student Ormani Smith.

And when the day is over, the sun has gone down and the weather instruments have been stored away; maybe one of these students will consider a career in the science field.

“And so we are trying to interact a little bit of experiential learning. And show teachers and students that science can be really fun,” said Burger.

While outside on the school grounds, the young scientists placed their thermometers on various object in order to get different temperatures.
