NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI)- If you live in Nettleton and you see smoke coming out of your home, don’t panic! It’s not a fire!

This week, the city will be conducting a Sewer System Evaluation Survey.

In the study, crews will open up manholes in the street, and smoke will be blown throw the sewer lines.

Contractors are sending out notices to residents to let them know the smoke is not toxic or hazardous.
It has no odor, and it’s not flammable.

Residents will only see smoke if they have bad plumbing, or dried up drain traps in their homes.
The study will help the city fix the sewer system up to code.

“The smoke will determine a busted line or maybe a hole in the service line that has come to the main line,” said Engineer Ray Guin. “We check from the storm drains and any other place that water might be infiltrating the sewer line.”

The City is using money from the Community Development Block Grant to fund the week long study.

If you do have problems with your sewer system, city officials say fix it right away by calling a plumber.
If you have a dried up drain trap, fill it with water so the smoke will not enter.
