Ole Miss Baseball Completes Sweep Of MSU

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – I was a nearly best-case scenario for Ole Miss, but it was a disaster for Mississippi State.

The Rebels won 8-7 in ten innings Saturday and finished off their sweep of the Bulldogs at Swayze Field. With the win, Ole Miss (28-24, 14-13 SEC) improved to 7-0 against State (24-27, 8-19 SEC) in the three major men’s sports this school year. It’s the first time the Rebels have accomplished that since 1972.

MSU led by five runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Ole Miss rallied and freshman Nic Perkins delivered the game-winning hit in the tenth.

Ole Miss, a projected 2 or 3 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, stayed in fourth place in the SEC West after the series. The sweep also kept the Rebels above .500 overall, a mark that is a must for qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

With the three losses, MSU is alone at the bottom of the SEC. The Bulldogs must climb back to at least 12th place in order to make the SEC Tournament.

Senior Sikes Orvis blasted two home runs for Ole Miss. MSU pitcher Austin Sexton pitched a stellar eight innings to begin the game, giving up just two earned runs.

Ole Miss will play at Arkansas State Tuesday, while the Bulldogs begin a three game series at Tennessee Thursday.
