STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The Mississippi State baseball team will say goodbye to one of its assistants this offseason.

Current assistant and recruiting coordinator Nick Mingione will be named the new head baseball coach at the University of Kentucky. MSU confirmed the news Monday.

Mingione has been with MSU for the past eight years. He’s the second assistant to leave in the last year under head coach John Cohen, after former pitching coach Butch Thompson took the head coaching position at Auburn in the fall.

Below is a statement from Cohen on Mingione’s departure:

“It’s been a privilege to watch Nick develop as a person and a coach for a decade. He’s a tireless recruiter who values relationships, and he’s done an outstanding job developing our players. We are grateful for what he has helped us accomplish at Mississippi State, including a national runner-up finish at the 2013 College World Series and the 2016 Southeastern Conference championship. I’ve always thought he would make a terrific head coach. Just like our former pitching coach Butch Thompson, I am glad Nick is getting an opportunity to become a head coach in the SEC.”

Mingione was an assistant at Kentucky for two years under Cohen, leaving in 2007. He followed Cohen to Starkville the next season.

Mingione’s move marked the fourth assistant coach to become a head coach under John Cohen, including the third to take the reigns at an SEC school.
