COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s a treasured tradition at Mississippi’s University for Women to celebrate graduation.
The Mag Chain ceremony has taken place since 1890.

During the event, the mag chain is carried by seniors singing the “Magnolia Chain Song.”

This years guest speaker at the ceremony was The W alumna, Linkie Marasis.

Originally from South Africa, Marasis is a 2006 graduate from the W’s culinary program.

She earned a spot as a finalist on the “Food Network Star” season 8 in 2012.

Also, a grill master, she has taken her career to new heights following a Big Green Egg competition.

Marasis’ message to the graduates  is to not be afraid of taking risks in life.

“Risks may sometimes only end up in experience and not success. But if you’re not going to take the risk, you’re not going to gain the experience nor the success.
So, I think that was my biggest thing was to take challenged and not be scared to failure because failure shapes you into what you are. Dig into everything, explore everything. You nay find a passion you didn’t know existed,” said Marasis.
Tradition says  graduates who are able to walk away with a magnolia blossom from the chain, will find good fortune and romance.
