Spring Break Travel Safety Tips

STARLVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The time many look forward to is almost here, spring break.

It’s a time for fun that can quickly take a turn for the worse.

Millions of high school and college students are preparing to embark on a long time tradition Spring break.

These Mississippi State students are already preparing for a safe ride.

“You have to be vigilant,”not text and drive just be very careful”

“No drinking and driving”

“Drive the speed limit is the most important thing”

Spring break is just a week away at MSU, and that means many will be hitting the road with destination fun set in the GPS.

“Just a mini vacation to Florida, going to go to the beach and just hang out,” said MSU Sophomore Destinee Ashford.

The catch is enjoying safely.

Turn down the radio, fasten your seat belt and don’t answer the phone are all tips law enforcement want spring breakers to exercise before hitting the road.

Starkville Police officer Brandon Lovelady says know the rules of the road where you plan to travel.

“If you have any other questions, transporting alcohol or possessing alcohol in certain places you’re going to have to check with that state or local area,” said  Lovelady.

Speed limits and gun laws also change from state to state.

Studies show each year, more than 1.5 million students plan to hop on the road to get to their vacation spots.

Lovelady says a few simple steps before you pack your bags can save a lot of trouble later on.

“Before a long trip you want to make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Check your fluids, filters the air in your tires. If you have a light on your dash this would be a good time to get that checked out before your trip before you’re half way down the road,” said Lovelady.

MSU Junior Jackson Ledford is hitting the road as soon as class lets out. He’s prepared to watch out for other drivers.

“If your safe if you drive safe other people are safe too. That’s the thing responsibility of driving other people’s lives are on your hand whether you know it or not,”said Ledford.
