STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — If you live in Starkville you may know about the mysterious rooster that roams on the side of the road.

Well we wanted to find out about what nearby residents thought of the feathered friend.

You may notice drivers slowing down while going through the intersection of Montgomery Street and Highway 82 in Starkville.

They all want to catch a glimpse of a local legend. A rooster.

Almost everyday this bright red yard bird struts through what is now his yard.

People expect to see him drive by, but the kids and teachers at happy start next door hear this king of the street.

“Everyday it goes cock-a-doodle-doo,” Areggiana Cannon.

“Everybody loved the rooster. The kids when their parents pull up they do not want ti come in the building until they see the rooster so we have to actually walk toward the front when he lives and let the kids see him,” says Angela Jones.

No one has officially named the rooster but the kids at Happy Start have a few ideas to call their feathered friend.

“Last time I saw the rooster at the man’s house and I said momma it’s the rooster. I’m going to name the rooster…the rooster’s name is Kaden just like my name,” says Kaden Wilson.

“I would like to call him chicken,” says Cannon.

Most people see the rooster hanging out in his front yard, but he’s even been known to make a special trip to see the kids because he doesn’t have to cross the street.

“One time when I was taking out the trash and I came into the door it was at the door looking at me,” says Cannon.

While some believe the rooster might belong in a barnyard, he’s become a pet to many in the area.

“Some people actually think the rooster belongs to us because he is always here in the parking lot. Sometimes he’ll come right here to the front door and he’ll get his little paws and just stretch on the door,” says Jones.

Some know him as the red rooster of Starkville or that crazy bird that walks along the side of the road, but there’s no doubt he’s scratching at the hearts of drivers and kids alike.

The owners could not be located at the time. Therefore, the rooster’s name is still unknown.
