Video: Childcare Teachers Being Taught

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-There is a national push to equip every young child with skills and the education needed to put him on a path to eventually landing a good job. That’s why high-quality childcare education is so important. Already in place at MSU, a child care center, one in a 17 satellite network system instructing loving individuals who have a passion to educate students age zero to five.

“And the other thing is having the knowledge behind that passion. So that they have the training in which you have, like the R&R provides that free training for my employees,” said Melissa Tenhet, MSU Center Director.

“Training childcare directors and teachers helps the children of our state to excel,” said Lynn McCafferty, MSU Trainer, Field Tech. Assistant.

The centers funded by The Mississippi department of Human Services in conjunction with the MSU Extension Service benefits visiting parents like Casey Watts. Thursday Watts was preparing activities for her girls ages one and two, for what might be a rainy weekend.

“I came in this morning and I’m cutting out different things for the girls to do some crafts with and different things. And we are trying to find some activities for them to do over the weekend because we’ll probably be inside a good bit,” said Watts.

“Grandparents have a lot of responsibility now with parents working and we provide an opportunity for them to come in here, get some needed materials that their children, their grandchildren can learn from,” said McCafferty.

Not just toddlers at the MSU Center, but also other home schooled youngsters and toddlers being educated in home child care settings. Care givers have the tools needed to educate while keeping their business financially afloat.

“And they help them with their business plans and making sure that their centers can stay open. Its hard to make money at a child care center, running a quality child care center, so our professionals show you how to do that,” said McCafferty.

“Through the many resources as materials, training, that one-on-one technical assistance in the classroom that comes in and helps our teachers, you know, do their job better,” said Tenhet.

The network has a mobile bus equipped with all of the resources and materials found at learning sites throughout the state.
