Video: Columbus Dropout Plan Again State Focus

[bitsontherun EfiHjCJZ]COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus’ community-based dropout recovery program again took center stage among state educators this week.

Schools superintendent Doctor Martha Liddell was a keynote speaker at Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s statewide dropout Summit in Jackson.

She talk on the city’s Project 2020 program which will use churches and community centers into computerized classrooms for dropouts to return to class on their own terms to get a diploma sparked interest from educators across the state. Liddell says it’s a topic everyone should be interested in.

“Right now all the research tells us that 75 percent of all the people sitting in prison cells are high school dropouts so how on earth as educators can we allow this to continue,” Liddell said.

Applications from community groups to become e-centers will be reviewed in two weeks.
