TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — An annual gathering for independent filmmakers is underway in Tupelo.

The 11th annual Tupelo Film Festival began Thursday. It features more than 40 short and long form films by independent movie makers from across the region and the nation.

This year the event has moved from the Lyric Theater to the Malco Theater, which means that the film festival is using two screens.

“The Malco staff could not be more accommodating, they have been wonderful to work with, things are just as smooth as they can be and this is our first year, we’re both green and we’re both learning but it’s not even a bobble that’s happened so very happy about being in the Malco, very excited about it,” said Pat Rasberry, of the Tupelo Film Commission.

Today a slate of Japanese films were screened. On Saturday, the event continues throughout the day, with a high school student film competition and a documentary about legendary Sun Records.
