SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Do the tough economic times make it hard for you to provide for your furry friends? There many be help for pet owners.
Wanda Blackston is retired. She lives on a fixed income. Every morning Wanda wakes up and worries how she will provide for her 5 rescue dogs. She hopes her application for pet food stamps will help her feed the four legged members of her family.
“Sometimes it’s a little hard, sometimes I do without so they can have something. Just like today I went and spent 28 dollars on treats for the little ones,” said Blackston.
The Pet Food Stamps program is a volunteer driven effort. It provides people, who otherwise can not afford it, with pet food and pet supplies.
“There’s a lot of people that can’t afford to feed their pets but you have to be on public assistance to get this,” added Blackston.
Hundreds of thousands of pets are put to sleep every year because their owners simply can’t feed them. Blackston’s oldest dogs are 15 and 13, and both have cancer. Extra money for pet food would go a long way .
“It will help out tremendously because I take some of my food stamps money and buy extra meat to supplement their dog food so it would help tremendously,” said Blackston.
After applying online it will take 6 to 8 weeks to process. To apply go to www.petfoodstamps.com
