‘Force’ Policy Clears First Hurdle

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Starkville schools could become among the first in the state to have a policy governing the use of force by its school resource officers.

The school board Tuesday night adopted on first reading rules for its armed school resource officers. The policy outlines what is reasonable at six different levels of confrontation with an intruder, unruly student or other disturbance.

Board members removed the use of Tasers or batons but did include pepper spray and deadly force. Resource officers must undergo regular weapons training.

fficers had been working under Starkville Police guidelines but school officials thought it best to have their own.

It could come up for second reading at the board’s March 7 meeting.
