COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Some Columbus residents gathered at Friendship Cemetery today for the 147th annual Observance of Decoration Day. It has been a tradition in Columbus since 1865 when daughters of the confederacy gathered flowers, ribbons, and other materials to decorate over 14-hundred graves of those who had passed away. Bettye Bridges, the President of daughters of the confederacy says ALL soldiers were honored for their sacrifice.
“No grave was left undecorated the blue and gray alike. They’re our heroes. You don’t really know who they are, but they belong to somebody,” says Bettye Bridges.
There are currently 2-THOUSAND and 94 confederate graves at Friendship Cemetery
