ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Folks throughout Aberdeen gathered together Saturday for a great cause.

Participants in the Gem 5K run/walk raised money for the scholarship program for graduating seniors at Houston High School. The scholarship was set up in memory of Elise Mobley, a Houston High sophomore cheerleader who died in a car accident last year.

Door prizes were given after awards were handed out to the placed participants. Elise’s mother says events like Saturday’s run have helped helped the family get through this past year.

“I think there is always been a misconception that when you lose a loved one, that it’s better not to mention that loved one or talk about them because it would upset the family, and I found that to be totally opposite. It really has been therapeutic for us and we couldn’t have made it through the last year without things like this,” Leigh Mobley said.

The race took place in front of the Gwendoline Elise Mobley House that was created for the youth of the First United Methodist Youth to gather for events.
