Itawamba Board Repays $23K Loan to Mantachie

FULTON, Miss. (AP) — Itawamba County is writing a $23,000 check to the Town of Mantachie for money used to renovate an area industrial building in 2011, but never repaid.

Chip Mills, attorney for the Mantachie Board of Aldermen, tells a local newspaper the money was used in 2011 to renovate a building that formerly housed PeopLoungers Furniture.

Jackson Furniture now occupies the building.

Mills says the city and county verbally agreed if the town helped with the cost of renovating the county-owned building, the town would be repaid if the building was ever sold.

The county sold the building in September 2013 and used the money to buy some land along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.

Mills sent a letter to supervisors asking for repayment, which the county board approved this past week.
