Legislation Allowing Armed Teachers Heads to Governor

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi lawmakers passed a bill Wednesday that could allow schools to arm teachers.

The original version of Senate Bill 2659 creates a program to help communities pay for school resource officers. Those law enforcement officers would be charged with policing around primary and secondary schools.

But in the conference process, an additional section was added to the bill to allow financially strapped schools to develop their own security plans. While the bill does not explicitly state that such plans would include arming teachers, the language for the amendment is borrowed from a previous House bill that aimed to arm teachers.

The issue of arming teachers was raised in a House debate on the bill, but the Senate passed it without discussion. The bill goes next to Gov. Phil Bryant.
