ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI)-If you own a firearm, it’s important that you know how to use it. Friday, the Monroe County Sheriff and some of his deputies visited the ladies of the Magnolia Garden club to pass long a lesson in gun safety.

Mary-Ellen Krummrich is a proud member of the Magnolia Garden Club in Aberdeen, but Friday’s meeting was more about pistols than plants.

Instructors from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department were here to teach the ladies how to protect themselves.

“I was interested and at least half of the membership was already in the possession of fire arms. I had never shot a gun in my life and I’m 70 years old, but there had been break-ins in our neighborhood and we’re retirees and well, we thought maybe it was time,” says Mary-Ellen Krummrich.

This was just a refresher course for Patsy Claxton. She’s spent her life around guns.

“I want to see how good my aim is. I grew up, my father hunted my husband hunted. I have been shooting all my life. Pistols, rifles, shot guns so a little safety course never hurts,” says Patsy Claxton.

The ladies from the magnolia club are not only learning how to properly use their guns, but they are learning safety procedures so they can become responsible gun owners.

“Today they are going to learn what the parts of the weapon, how to manipulate their weapons, handguns handling and safety and learn how to load their weapons and how to hold it and actually shoot their gun,” says John Bishop.

Governor Phil Bryant recently signed legislation to protect the personal information of state residents who hold a concealed firearms permit.

Gun Safety Trainer John Bison says, since then, demand for his class has grown.

“We have seen a drastic increase in the people that are wanting training around the country and surrounding counties also,” says Bishop.

As gun sales increase it’s important for all gun buyers to get proper training on their weapon.

“It’s important that for the citizens to make sure training they get proper training. We just ask that everybody gets most training as possible,” says Bishop.

“But I promise you we’ll be good responsible…shooters,” says Krummrich.
