Memphis Police Officer Fired After Crash Kills Two

By The Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis police officer who was involved in a fatal crash that left two people dead was fired after a hearing Monday.

Police said 23-year-old Alex Beard violated policies related to responding to calls and personal conduct. Beard did not have his lights or siren on when the crash occurred, police said.

Beard was responding to a call in his marked police car on Aug. 26 when he struck the passenger side of a 1996 Mercury Mystique that was trying to turn left. Killed were 54-year-old Delores Epps and 13-year-old Mackala Epps. Two other people were injured.

The mother and daughter were visiting from Senatobia, Miss., for a relative’s 50th birthday party.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted the review of the crash and the results have been turned over to the district attorney’s office.

Beard had been with the department since October 2010.
