Video: 150th Anniversary Of The Battle At Brice’s Crossroads Draws In Visitors

BALDWYN, MISS. (WCBI) —  It’s a battle that took place more than 100 years ago and today, many are still visiting the site of Battle of Brice’s Crossroads. Today, nearly 100 children and families gathered at the site to learn about what life was like many years ago.

It’s a celebration of history this weekend at the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads. The 150th anniversary is a time when many will look back at Civil War battle, some call it the only perfect battle ever fought. That’s why many visitors are still drawn to the historic sight.

“That’s right, you’re standing on hallowed ground. To think about people that actually fought and died here 150 years ago, we want to commemorate that today,” said Edwina  Carpenter, Director of the weekend events.

Living historians, music of the civil war era, and fire arms demonstrations are just a few sites that are bringing history alive, especially for children.Now, the students are able to see and experience life during the war between the states.

“It’s very important for the children to have an opportunity to learn on their level about the culture of the area, the communities and also about the history of the Civil War and the times, the 1860’s,” said Carpenter.

People recreating this battle and the camps that surround the historic land hope this will experience will spark an interest in preserving the series of events that have shaped our nation today.

“The history of the war is fading in the past and we need to stir that interest and get them to first of all, want to know their history of the Civil War, war that was fought right here in their front yards, for those who live here and generally to get them to want to study history and hopefully the civil war and become actively involved in their history,” said Dr. E.C. Fields, Jr, who portrays General Ulysses S. Grant.
