COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Unless it’s under bad circumstances, most people seldom have a conversation with their local police chief or even a police officer.

New Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton said he hopes to change that.

As part of building stronger community relations from top to bottom and from the streets to boardrooms, Carleton and his staff held the first Coffee With a Cop talking session this morning at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Citizens were able to meet officers, discuss any issue they wanted and do it all in a relaxed setting.

Citizens who attended said they liked having such an opportunity.

“We are excited about having the community to come out and meet us sometimes, and a lot of time they won’t come to the department and let us know what happened — their ideas to what’s happening in their community, so we want to come out and meet them on common ground,” Carleton said.

Carleton said he is planning more sessions during different times of the day across the city.
