MANTACHIE, Miss. (WCBI) — North Mississippi residents now have access to a natural gas pump, thanks to the Northeast Mississippi Natural Gas District in Mantachie.

Gas district officials and residents celebrated the opening of a compressed natural gas pump in Mantachie.

There are several benefits to converting to natural gas use, including cleaner air for a lower cost. A gallon of the natural gas goes for about $1.60.

The Mantachie station is the largest distribution center for the area.

Organizers say this is the future for Mississippi.

“The vehicles that run on natural gas get the same miles per gallon that you do on gasoline, and it’s a lot cleaner, and it’s probably going to turn out to be one of the biggest job creators in the state of Mississippi, just with the conversions of vehicles and trucks,” District Manager Mike Horton said.

Any vehicle can be converted to use natural gas for a one-time cost.
