NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI) –

Each year, the town of Nettleton pulls together to honor those who have served the country. As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports, this ceremony was the largest ever, and it featured a surprise, several years in the making.
The true American Heroes were given a rousing reception as they entered the gym at Nettleton High School for the Veterans Day Celebration.

“Serving your country and then walking in and seeing those students applauding and being with others on a day like today that means so much to veterans, it’s really a feeling that’s hard to describe.”

The message for this program was simple, respect the flag, standup for America and honor veterans.Virtually all Nettleton students attended the ceremony and were eager to show their support.

“I think it’s important to have programs like this so the veterans will know how appreciative we are of all they do to serve our country.”

After the assembly, veterans and their family members were treated to lunch at First United Methodist Church.

“I think it’s really great that people think enough of us to put on a function like this every year, I’ve been coming for the last eight years, seems like it gets better and better every year.”

“This means a lot to me, especially for a town like this to get together and all students in school to put on a ceremony like this, it’s quite an honor.”

“It is the greatest thing in the world and I could not over exaggerate it.I’m highly pleased with what my old hometown Nettleton is doing.”

Everything wrapped up with the long awaited dedication of a Veteran’s Memorial in the park.

“That lets the people in this community know we are still concerned about veterans and this community is a patriotic community.”

Although it took five years of planning and fund raising, the black granite monument will remind generations to come of the sacrifices many have made for freedom. In Nettleton I’m Allie Martin WCBI News
