Video: Teacher Pay Raise: One Step Closer to Governor’s Desk

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Teacher pay raise proposals are gaining momentum at the Mississippi Capitol. Senators unanimously passed a plan today to give teachers an additional $1500.00 this July 1st and another $1,000.00 a year later. After that teachers could become eligible for merit raises.

The House passed its own teacher pay raise plan in early February. It would provide $4, 250.00 over four years, but experienced teachers would have to meet certain criteria to collect the full amount.

The chambers must agree on a single plan before anything can go to Republican Governor Phil Bryant, who has said that he generally¬† favors increasing Teachers’ compensation. The House could accept the Senate plan, or the two chambers could negotiate.
