Volunteer Opportunities for August
Need Period: August 1 – 31, 2014

-Volunteer Guides/Navigators (LOUISVILLE/WINSTON COUNTY VOLUNTEERS ONLY)
Will guide volunteer teams to worksite locations. Need to be familiar with local streets, roads, and highways. Must have reliable transportation.Availability needed: Typically, Monday – Saturday, 8:00 am – 9:00 am and/or by call. Will not be an everyday need.

Great volunteer opportunity for active senior citizen or stay-at home mom (after school starts)
Volunteer will not have to remain on-site with team.

-Driver/Navigator (LOUISVILLE/WINSTON COUNTY VOLUNTEERS ONLY)
Date Specifics: August 4 – 15, 2014
Assist World Renew Ministry Survey Teams by locating and transporting Teams (2 people – typically a husband/wife
couple) to various locations in Winston County to complete the Needs Assessment Survey. Must have reliable transportation.
Availability needed: Monday – Saturday, with a varied schedule and by call.

-TRAINED Chainsaw / Debris Removal Teams w/skidsteer loader or tractor/loader
Approximately 10 – 15 chainsaw and debris removal projects remain to be completed. Most are small projects with trees less than 24”, however one project has two downed and limbed trees that are 48”+ diameter. Teams will cut and pile debris for burning or removal. Several projects have been cut and need piling for burning or removal.

– Tarp Team (LOUISVILLE/WINSTON COUNTY and Surrounding Area Volunteers only)
3 projects. On Call Tarp Crew to re-tarp homes that were tarped after the storm, but have been loosened by the passing of time and further storms. 3 – 5 adult men with ladders and tools. Tarps, slats, and tacks provided.

– Fine Debris / Yard Rake
15+ projects. Excellent opportunity for supervised youth (14+) group service or ministry projects. Assist homeowners by working after the completion of debris removal to remove remaining debris from areas to facilitate rebuild, repair, or regular maintenance efforts. Some sites can also use grass trimmer use.

– Gut Out Demolition
8-10 projects. Removal of damaged building materials including lumber, roofing, drywall, insulation, and floorcovering from affected homes. Work is determined by repair needs of each location. Basic demolition and construction tools are needed. Some are available from the Winston STRONG Volunteer Operations Center. Supervised Older Youth (16+) and adult volunteers only.

– Salvage/Pack Up
5-6 projects. Assist homeowner in packing and moving items from their homes to storage in preparation for repair or demolition activities. Some boxes, padding blankets, and wrapping materials are available. Groups may want to consider bringing materials in support of packing up (newspaper, medium boxes, and tape). In some cases project will require offsite transport so a truck and small trailer could be used. In other cases, homeowner will provide transport.

Construction Volunteer Needs
(all teams should have designated, experienced leaders) Some projects can be combined to where a group could work on a single structure to completion of needed tasks.

– Roofing Teams
8-10 projects. Experienced volunteer roofing teams are preferred or teams led by trained experience roofers to supervise. Will be working with gable and hip roofs. Projects may include roof deck work, felt paper, and shingle application. Most projects are fully funded to estimated cost. Will work under the direction of action plans developed by the Winston STRONG Construction Manager.

– Floor Covering
3-4 Projects. Installation of Linoleum, Laminate, and/or Carpet in repairable homes. Team should have at least 1 or 2 members experienced in laying floorcovering. . Most projects are fully funded to estimated cost. Will work under the direction of action plans developed by the Winston STRONG Construction Manager.

– Sheetrock/Drywall
6-8 projects. Installation and finishing of drywall. Projects vary from single rooms to whole house. Includes walls and ceilings. Insulation may be needed to be installed. . Most projects are fully funded to estimated cost. Will work under the direction of action plans developed by the Winston STRONG Construction Manager.

– Carpentry/Construction
8-10 projects. Repair work on storm damaged homes. Work may be external (fascia, siding, etc.) and/or internal (walls, ceilings, traditional foundations). Most projects are fully funded to estimated cost. Will work under the direction of action plans developed by the Winston STRONG Construction Manager.

– Cabinetry
3- 4 projects. Repair work on storm damaged homes. Work may be kitchen and/or bathroom cabinets. Installation and finishing. Most projects are fully funded to estimated cost. Will work under the direction of action plans developed by the Winston STRONG Construction Manager.
